Airport: EGFF - Cardiff Airport, Wales
Like many airports, Cardiff started off as a military field. This one was named RAF Rhoose and officially opened in 1942. After the war it fell into disuse and was abandoned until 1952 when it was rebuilt and turned into a commercial airport. Continual improvements into the 1980s saw the runway extended to its current length of 7,700 ft allowing jet aircraft to use the field. Since this included the Boeing 747 this attracted British Airways to build their largest maintenance facility at Cardiff.
This is the only international airport in Wales and has steadily increased routes to many parts of Europe and even the United States by way of a tourism charter linking Cardiff with Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida. Air traffic had increased so much that ground traffic routes around the airport needed a rebuild of their own, to include a proposal for a rail connection to the South Wales Main Line.
