Airport:  TIST - Cyril E. King Airport, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands 

This is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean serving points in the United States and other Caribbean islands.  Its origins began in 1927 when Charles Lindbergh landed the Spirit of St. Louis on a grassy swamp that would later form the airport.  It was a deployed location for P-40 Warhawks in WW2.  It was called Harry S Truman Airport until 1984 when it was renamed for the second governor of the US Virgin Islands.

The airport has a single 7,000' runway and has supported larger aircraft like the B767 and DC-10.  The terminal has 11 gates, most serving US destinations.  3 gates cover international flights to Europe, South America, and other colonial island territories.  A major expansion project is underway as of 2021, expecting to be completed around 2028.  It will include modernization improvements and add a water taxi terminal for easier island connections.

Read a funny statistic about this airport.  A large cruise terminal sits 5 miles from the airport serving Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, etc….  Of all cruise port locations in the Caribbean, this airport apparently gets more passenger traffic from “stranded” cruise passengers that missed their boats.  They would then fly to the ship’s next port stop so they could reconnect with their cruise.
