Description: South Africa is the southernmost country in Africa. With over 59 million people, it is the world's 24th-most populous nation and covers an area of 471,445 square miles. Three times the size of California. South Africa has three capital cities: executive Pretoria, judicial Bloemfontein and legislative Cape Town. The largest city is Johannesburg. You will travel to another country within a country, Lesotho. Lesotho is an enclaved country within the border of South Africa. It is by far the largest of the world's three independent states completely surrounded by the territory of another country; with Vatican City and San Marino being the other two. Additionally, it is the only such state outside the Italian peninsula, and the only one that is not a microstate. It can be identified by the ICAO FXMM. South Africa contains some of the oldest archaeological and human-fossil sites in the world. Archaeologists have recovered extensive fossil remains from a series of caves in Gauteng Province. The area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been branded "the Cradle of Humankind". These finds suggest that various hominid species existed in South Africa from about three million years ago, starting with Australopithecus africanus. Modern humans have inhabited Southern Africa for at least 170,000 years.
