US GA Tour – Michigan, Part 1Description: Enjoy some coastline flying in the great state of Michigan bordering 4 of the 5 Great Lakes. Numerous islands make up part of Michigan’s territory helping to give it the longest freshwater coastline and the second-most water area of any state, behind Alaska. Much of Michigan is protected land providing many scenic natural vistas. With 78 state parks, 19 state recreation areas, and 6 state forests, Michigan has the largest park and forest system of any state. . . . .Michigan boasts many industries, most notably the automobile. It is also the third-largest grower of Christmas trees, the birthplace of Dominos and Little Caesars pizza, and home to Hires Root Beer. While aviation doesn’t have much factor here Michigan does claim the first airplane flight four years ahead of the Wright Brothers. The facts are greatly disputed among historians, but Augustus Herring flew distances of 50 feet and 73 feet in October 1899 with a “semi-powered” glider of his own design. Charles Lindbergh, the famous aviator that traversed the Atlantic, was born in Detroit shortly after in 1902. . . . .Remember many US GA airports use 3-digit codes.
