Airport: ZKPY - Pyongyang Int'l Airport, North Korea 

According to SkyVector there are just two commercial airports in this country.  Wonsan Kalma Airport (ZKWS) was newly built in 2015 and sits on what you might consider as North Korea’s “resort” district.  This would’ve been a great destination but the airport is so new that it doesn’t exist in current sims and no download addons were found on the more common flight sim websites.  Therefore, Pyongyang it is.

Pyongyang was built in the 1940s by the Empire of Japan as a military field when it occupied the Korean peninsula.  One strange feature exists in that they built a bridge over the Potong River to build a second runway to the north.  This second runway was used until 2013 when the bridge fell into such disrepair that it could no longer support the weight of aircraft moving across it.  Despite North Korea’s isolation from the rest of the world, a large modern terminal building was constructed in 2016. 

Pyonyang was connected to Moscow and other points in Russia via Aeroflot Airlines until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1993.  North Korea’s prime carrier Air Koryo continued flights to Moscow and on to Berlin but ceased those flights by 2002.  Korean Air and Asiana Airlines also had flights from Seoul until around 2008 that catered to visits by families separated by the border.  Most flights from ZKPY today appear to only serve points within China.
